Lorry loads of help for flood-hit families

Four lorry loads of help for flood-hit residents were received by Somerset County Council today (Wednesday), a generous donation from Tesco supermarket.

The special delivery worth £35,000 is made up of nearly 400 items of furniture and ‘home starter kits’ for families facing the most hardship which have a microwave, kettle, cutlery and other essentials.

It arrived in Bridgwater this morning and was unloaded by volunteers from Flooding on the Levels Action Group. It will be stored and eventually available as part of the multi-agency support for those affected by the flooding of the levels and moors.

Councillor John Osman, Leader of Somerset County Council, said: “Big thanks go to Tesco for this generous donation. This, and the many other donations that have been received, show the extent to which these floods have struck a chord way beyond the boundaries of Somerset.

“There are lots of agencies working closely together to help people with the difficult task of recovery, offering a wide range of advice and support covering everything from insurance claims to emotional support.”

Sara Goodman, Tesco Store Manager in Ilminster, said: “Many of our colleagues live in the Levels and have witnessed the devastation first-hand. We are doing everything we can to help those communities in need – from fundraising to rolling up our sleeves and supporting the clean-up.

“Donating the new furniture is our latest pledge and we’re delighted it will benefit so many local families. It has been a big team effort, working alongside Somerset County Council and Flag, and this partnership will be ongoing.”

The many donations of goods and supplies are being kept at the Donation Centre at Huntworth Business Park, near Junction 24 in Bridgwater. People affected by the flooding who need supplies – from food and toiletries, to clothes and bedding – can get them from the centre. It is open from Sunday to Thursday, 10am -3pm and people need to bring ID so that their address can be confirmed.

The County Council is looking for a new warehouse to store donations. Anyone with suitable space of around 13,500 square footin the Bridgwater area is asked to email SCCPropertyServices@somerset.gov.uk
