The Bridgwater Way Project hosts an exciting and free BMX event on 22 May designed to captivate children and adults alike, and encourage them to think about alternative ways of travelling to school.
Taking place at the Bridgwater YMCA BMX track, ‘On Your Bike’ will wow audiences with gravity-defying BMX tricks and demos. There are also competitions, giveaways and workshops, as well as plenty of advice on ways residents can get involved in cycling or walking.
Making the most of the space at the track, the event is ideal for children and their parents as it takes place after school (4.30pm – 6.30pm), with food and drink available. Dr Bike will also be there, offering FREE bike servicing.
“This is about getting people excited about bikes and cycling and it should be spectacular”, said Somerset County Councillor Harvey Siggs, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport.
“The YMCA has already been used for some of our Bike It work with children to get them feeling confident on two wheels. The idea is that once people get into cycling it’s something they’ll consider as an alternative to the car when it comes to going to school, college or work.”
‘On Your Bike’ is one of many planned events by The Bridgwater Way project, funded by the Department for Transport. The initiative aims to transform travel in the town, making it easier and safer to walk or cycle. As well as developing 6.5 miles of new or improved cycle paths, TBW will work with residents, businesses and schools to promote safer travel. The project is being delivered through a partnership of Somerset County Council, Sustrans and Sedgemoor District Council.
TBW want to inspire and encourage residents who might be new to cycling or want to build experience to take up their range of services. This includes guided bike rides through Sky Ride Local, with the first ride taking place on 18th May. For more information visit www.goskyride.com/somerset-bridgwater
