Can you take the heat? Firewalk for charity

There are still spaces available for people to get involved in a unique charity challenge next week (Thursday 6 November).

Following the success of the County Hall Abseil earlier this year, where brave participants raised over £13,000, the Chairman of Somerset County Council, Cllr David Fothergill, is inviting people to take up the last few remaining places of a firewalking challenge that’s sure to get people hot under the collar.

As the name suggests, a firewalk involves walking bare foot over red-hot wood embers with the heat reaching up to 800 degrees. It will take place at The Wyvern Club, Taunton at 7pm.

Talking about the event and the money that has already been raised for his chosen charities, The National Autistic Society and the Somerset Trust for Arts & Recreation, David said: “We have raised over £25,000 in the last 14 months through a great variety of fundraising events.

“The generosity and enthusiasm of everyone who has taken part since we launched the Somerset Chairman’s Charity has been overwhelming and I’d like to thank them all for their support. Now it’s time to turn up the heat on the fundraising efforts at my next challenge – come along and have a go and help us raise even more money.”

Firewalking experts will be on hand throughout the event and full training will be provided before people take their turn. Training will begin at 5.30pm and must be completed in order to take part.

Each participant is expected to raise a minimum of £25 and must pay a deposit of £10 (which can count towards your final sponsorship amount).

Friends and family are all welcome to watch, with food and drink available all evening at the Wyvern Club.

All proceeds raised will be divided equally between the Chairman’s 2 chosen charities – The National Autistic Society and the Somerset Trust for Arts & Recreation (providing those little extras for Children in Care in Somerset).

Payments can be made by cash or cheque with cheques made payable to ‘SCC – Somerset Chairman’s Charities’ and sent to Lindsey Tawse, A137, County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY.
