Pupils celebrate as Primary School reveals results of big build

Pupils, parents and staff are looking forward to unveiling the results of a million-pound makeover project at North Petherton Community Primary School next week.

Thanks to a £1.012million investment from Somerset County Council, North Petherton’s primary school now has a whole host of new features and facilities:

  • Three new classrooms, giving youngsters a better overall learning experience, accommodating a rise in pupil numbers in the area
  • A ‘breakout’ area linking the existing and new classrooms, a flexible space ideal for group work or quiet time
  • A new car park for school staff and visitors to reduce the number of cars parking on local roads
  • An additional pedestrian access into the rear of the school with a new bicycle shelter to reduce the number of cars around the school entrance
  • Access-controlled gates at all entrances, controlled from the school office
  • Revamped play areas, with a new pedestrian bridge over the stream
  • The play fort and a ‘trim trail’ have been relocated to the centre of the school campus
  • A new staff and visitor vehicle entrance has also been created, accessible from Mill Street. The former School Fields entrance is now pedestrian-only.

Head teacher Gary Hobbs, said: “Clever classrooms, perfect playgrounds, a breath-taking bridge, an enticing entrance, lustrous lighting and a spacious staffroom – just a few words to describe the amazing additions to North Petherton Primary School over the last six months.

“The children, governors and staff would like to thank Somerset County Council for funding the expansion of and the improvements to our school.  As a result of this significant investment we really do find it easier to function as ‘one school’.

“The buildings and the grounds now create one tremendous and exciting learning environment for our children.”

Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, said: “It is fantastic to see the results of our much-needed investment in North Petherton Community Primary School, and the real, positive difference the enhanced school campus and classrooms is making to staff, pupils and parents.

“This was a huge project for the school, which is now fit to serve the needs of its pupils both today and in the future.”

An opening ceremony will be held at the school on Wednesday 17 December at 10am at North Petherton Community Primary School, School fields, North Petherton, Bridgwater, TA6 6LU.

Notes to editors

North Petherton Primary School was formed in 2009 when the Junior and Infant Schools amalgamated.

The Dolphins private nursery which had been on the Infant site then became central separating the new primary school into two parts.

In August 2014, the Dolphins Nursery building was moved to a new area, leased on the school site, to allow the Nursery to expand and the development of the centre of the school campus. Today the new pedestrian bridge across the stream means the two sites feel united.
