New fares and ‘live’ travel updates in the pipeline for Park and Ride

New fares for using Taunton’s Park and Ride service are being introduced by Somerset County Council from April 2015, for the first time in four years.

In a key step to boost the service’s sustainability, rises in ticket prices will come into effect from Tuesday 7 April. Adults will pay 20p extra for a day return, taking the cost to £2.40. A child day return will rise by 10p to £1.40, and a weekly travel ticket will cost £10 instead of £9.

The Taunton Park & Ride fare rises are the first since April 2011.

The following new charges for using the service will take effect from Tuesday 7 April 2015:

Ticket type:
Adult Day Return £2.40
Child Day Return £1.40
Shopper Ticket £1.70
Group Ticket £6.00
Weekly Ticket £10.00
Flexirider £12.00
Monthly £33.00
Annual £330.00

Cllr Harvey Siggs, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Somerset County Council, said: “We have waited for as long as possible before having to implement these rises in fares for people using the Park and Ride, and this is the first time in four years we’ve increased our rates.

“No one likes having to pay a bit more, but the current financial climate, including huge reductions in Central Government funding, has led to us having to significantly reduce the budget for the Park and Ride service, which is why we are now having to take this step.”

Positive change is already underway and in the pipeline for the Park & Ride service.

Since January, both the Silk Mills and Taunton Gateway Park & Ride services have added an extra, off-peak stop-off at Musgrove Park Hospital to their routes. The buses now stop at Musgrove Park Hospital between 9.30am and 4pm, Monday to Saturday – great news for staff and visitors alike.

A successful bid for capital funding – which is awarded for specific infrastructure or building projects – also means that five ‘real time’ travel boards will be phased in across the Taunton service route in the future.

These will keep users informed with up-to-the-minute updates of when buses will arrive at specific bus stops.

Cllr Siggs added: “So there is also good news for Park and Ride customers, with the addition of the extra, off-peak stop at Musgrove along the route, and phasing in of minute-by-minute information boards, to keep service users up to date.”
