Major plans to expand Wincanton Primary School to meet a rising demand for school places have been announced by Somerset County Council.
The proposals would see around £5m invested to secure nearby land and build eight new classrooms.
The council is now working with the landowner to secure the purchase of the land and planning permission so the building work can begin.
Cllr Frances Nicholson, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “Wincanton is a growing town and more houses means more people and more children, which creates a growing demand for school places.
“It has been always our preference to expand Wincanton Primary School to meet this demand, and I’m pleased we are now working with the landowner to make this happen.
“These are ambitious plans to provide top class facilities for our children. We still have a way to go, but hopefully the new classrooms will be open for September 2017.”
