People are invited to a free ‘Know Your Risk’ road-show where they can find out their risk of getting Type 2 diabetes and get valuable information about how to reduce it.
Type 2 diabetes is serious and can lead to devastating complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness or amputation. But, if managed properly, people with Type 2 diabetes can live long, healthy lives.
Diabetes UK has partnered up with Somerset County Council during Diabetes Week (14-20 June) to deliver an event this Saturday 20th June organised for visitors and the farming community at the livestock market at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, off junction 24 of the M5.
In the UK, there are 11.5 million people at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and an estimated 2.9 million people already diagnosed with the condition. In Somerset, over 28,000 people are living with diabetes.
You’re more likely to get Type 2 diabetes if you’re overweight, have a large tummy, you’re aged over 40 (or over 25 if you are South Asian), and if you have a parent, child, brother or sister with diabetes.”
At the roadshow visitors will be able to find out more about Healthy Living services available to them in Somerset.
People already diagnosed with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes can visit the stand for more information on how to manage the condition.
Anyone who can’t attend the roadshow can find out their risk of Type 2 diabetes online at http://www.diabetes.org.uk/knowyourrisk
