Asking for views in Axbridge, Taunton, Shepton Mallet, Dunster and Bridgwater

Somerset County Council’s public engagement roadshow is heading for towns in Mendip, West Somerset, Taunton Deane and Sedgemoor next month.

During August, Listening Learning Changing events will take place in Axbridge (1 August), Taunton (15 August), Shepton Mallet (16 August), Dunster (21 August) and Bridgwater (22 August), seeking the public’s views on the Council’s priorities and other key issues.

The stand at the Dunster Show has just been added to the itinerary and please note that the visit to Junction 24 is now taking place on Saturday 22 August, not 19 September as previously advertised.

This is the third year the authority has run the roadshows, asking people to try their hand at balancing its budget on a giant set of scales. People can also show their priorities by placing coins in our ‘Think Tanks’ and complete a short questionnaire.

The same questionnaire is also now available online ( so those who cannot come along to an event still have the chance to get involved.

Hundreds of people have already come along to speak to staff, sharing their views as the Council faces up to the challenge of reduced funding and increasing demand for services.

The Council’s income from central government is due to fall by more than £40m by 2019/2020 at the latest and the authority estimates it will need to save in the region of £30m from its budget this year.

“I’m glad so many people have already found the time to come and speak to us,” said Councillor John Osman, Leader of Somerset County Council.

“The combination of falling funding from government, increasing demand for services as our population ages and inflationary costs put us in a very challenging position. We are going to have to make difficult decisions to balance our budget this year. I want to listen to what people have to say so, where possible, we can take it into account when making those difficult budget decisions.”

The roadshows are visiting 15 locations across the county. Representatives from the Council will be on hand to answer questions and fun activities will be available to keep children entertained.
