The multi-usage games area (MUGA) at Ilchester Community Primary School is now available for use by the school and wider community. This includes families from the nearby MOD housing estate where a member of the family works, or contributes to work, at nearby RNAS Yeovilton Air Station.

The facility cost £138,000 and has been part-funded by the Community Covenant Grant Scheme, with the remaining £34,500 coming from Somerset County Council and community groups.

The Community Covenant Fund is an MOD initiative providing funding for local projects which strengthen ties between the Armed Forces and the surrounding community.

The project has also been supported by the Somerset Armed Forces Community Covenant (SAFCC). In Somerset the SAFCC is hosted by the County Council, bringing together charities, local authorities, other public sector organisations, businesses, communities and the military in a pledge of support between local residents and the armed forces community in Somerset.

Cllr Christopher Le Hardy, Chairman of the Somerset Armed Forces Community Covenant Partnership, said: “Securing this funding from the Community Covenant has gone a long way to support community projects in Somerset. However, we feel this is just the start of the support we can give to local projects with a military link. We are hoping that Somerset will continue with this success through the Ministry of Defence’s new Covenant Fund and go forward to help many other groups in the future.”
