Somerset County Council today paid tribute to former Chairman and long-standing County Councillor, Henry Hobhouse, who died earlier this month.
Mr Hobhouse, known as Tom, was County Councillor for Wincanton for over a decade, between May 1981 and May 1993.
He was Chairman of the County Council between 1989 and 1992, and during his career served on more than a dozen committees including Education, Social Services; and Libraries, Museums and Records.
Current Chairman, Councillor Christine Lawrence, led the tributes saying: “Although I didn’t know Tom, I understand he was a long-standing campaigner and champion of his communities’ interests, during his time with the County Council and beyond.
“The wide range of committees on which he served goes some way to showing his commitment to the Council and the residents it represents.
“He followed a long line of public service from the Hobhouse family and upheld their own traditions of being passionate about local people and great characters.”
“Our sympathies are with his family and this is a great loss to Somerset as a whole,” said Cllr Lawrence.
