Refurbishment work starts on first public service hub

Refurbishment of Glastonbury Library at Orchard Court is now underway as Somerset County Council’s plans to create a public service ‘hub’ gather pace.

The hub will bring together a number of County Council and other public sector services under one roof. Bringing services together into a safe, welcoming and shared space will benefit customers. It will also generate income and reduce costs, helping to make Council services more sustainable for the future.

Feedback from over a thousand people, gathered through public engagement in December, is being used to help shape the plans for this and future hubs in key towns across Somerset. Reflecting feedback received from residents, the word ‘library’ will be incorporated in the name of the new hub.

Services at the Glastonbury Library Hub include the Library; the Registrars; getset Children’s Service; Health Visitors; Midwives; and Mendip District Council Access Point. Citizens Advice will also continue to be based at Orchard Court throughout the refurbishment works.

In order to complete the refurbishment work, Glastonbury Library at Orchard Court will be closed from Friday 20 May until Wednesday 8 June and from Friday 15 July until Wednesday 27 July.

A temporary library service will be available on the first floor at Orchard Court between Thursday 9 June and Thursday 14 July (a lift is available). The temporary library will include a selection of books and DVDs, study and reading areas and computers for customer use.

The temporary library service will be open from 10am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays. The temporary library is closed on Wednesdays.

Alternatively, the nearby Street library is open every day except Tuesdays and Sundays. Please visit  or phone 0300 123 2224 for information on opening times.

Councillor Harvey Siggs, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “We’re designing these new hubs to provide modern, flexible spaces that reflect the changing needs of our customers and the local community. Staff at Orchard Court are working hard to minimise impacts on service delivery during refurbishment and we look forward to opening our first hub there in July.”

The fully refurbished library will reopen on Thursday 28 July. In the meantime, other services at the hub will be affected as follows:

  • Wells Registration Office will be closed from Friday 22 July reopening in the newly refurbished Orchard Court from Thursday 28 July, offering Birth; Death and Notice of Marriage/Civil Partnership registrations and final ceremony arrangement appointments.
  • getset Children’s Centre, Benedict Street, Glastonbury will be closed from Wednesday 20 July and will reopen in Orchard Court on Monday 8 August.
  • Mendip District Council Access Point will relocate to Crispin Community Centre in Street during refurbishment work details of their services and opening times can be found at This service will reopen to the public at Orchard Court on Thursday 28 July.
  • Citizens Advice will be unaffected as they will remain on site throughout refurbishment work, seeing clients with pre-arranged appointments. There will still be the drop-in facility at their offices in Street and Wells.
