29 of Somerset’s youth clubs meet up to date quality standards

29 youth clubs across the county have achieved Somerset County Council’s most up to date benchmark of ‘Safe and Welcoming’.

The ‘Safe and Welcoming’ benchmark scheme accredits the club’s safe practice and appeal to young people. Each youth club must build a portfolio containing witness statements, policies, health and safety practice and building safety details in order to obtain the award.

The award is then valid for three years and is a condition of Somerset County Council youth club funding. The award is split into a sections looking at what young people can expect to experience at the club, the people who contribute to or work in the club, and policies, procedures and paperwork.

To achieve the benchmark scheme award each youth club has to provide supporting evidence for all the criteria.

Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, said: “It is reassuring for parents and carers to know that their local youth club is safe, sustainable and ‘young people friendly’. Once a youth club has gained this award, it becomes instantly recognisable to young people and their families as a great resource for their community.”

Stuart Batson of Stoke St Michael Youth Club said; “Our club now has a benchmark that many of the other bigger clubs have and can now reassure potential new members and their parents that we are run professionally and are a safe well supported club.”

Seven clubs in Mendip and West Somerset, six in Sedgemoor and South Somerset and three in Taunton Deane have achieved the award.

A further eleven clubs are currently building their portfolios.
