Somerset’s Stars shine brightly during National Volunteers’ Week

From selfless volunteers supporting women who have suffered rape or abuse to a man who co-ordinates the paraplegic games at the Bath & West Show – ‘Star’ volunteers from across Somerset were recognised for their commitment at awards ceremonies last week.

As part of National Volunteers Week (1-12 June) celebrations, voluntary organisations and members of the public were asked to nominate their ‘Somerset Star’ volunteers who deserve special recognition for the voluntary work they do. Over 100 nominations were received with winners for each district awarded the prestigious award as part of the Volunteers’ Week celebrations.

The winners were as follows:

  • Taunton Deane: Overall winner, Mindline; Individual winner, Sylvia Twine
  • West Somerset: Overall winner, The Phoenix Centre; Individual winner, Beverley Harratt
  • Environment winner (sponsored by Exmoor National Park), Kevin Snewing
  • Mendip: Individual winner, Rex and Pat Steer
  • South Somerset: Group winner, Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Group (SARSAS)
  • Sedgemoor: Individual winner:Mike and Denice Perrin

Councillor Christine Lawrence, Chairman of Somerset County Council said; “It is fantastic that we can recognise just a few of our dedicated volunteers with these awards. Volunteers are Somerset’s unsung heroes that do so much without asking for anything in return and I would personally like to thank all volunteers for their work.”

Successful entries from each district of the county were selected by local volunteer network panels.

All entries will now be put forward to win the County Star Volunteer Award, a very special award chosen by a panel of Somerset County Council senior executives and Cabinet members. It will be presented to the winner at the Somerset County Council Chairman’s Awards this autumn.
