Libraries support Holocaust Memorial Day

Somerset County Council Libraries are marking Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January) to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

All Somerset Libraries will have copies of the Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) booklet produced by the HMD Trust, and customers can pick up a booklist of appropriate titles to read.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked by thousands of people who come together in schools, workplaces and public spaces. By pausing together to reflect on the appalling events of the past, those who mark Holocaust Memorial Day commit to creating a safer, better future.

Somerset County Council is also supporting a Holocaust Memorial Day event on Thursday 26 January between 12:30pm and 1:30pm at St John the Evangelist Church in Taunton. The event commemorates acts of genocide and their victims including the Holocaust, and is civic and secular, and people of all faiths and none are welcome. The programme will include music, readings, the laying of a wreath and the lighting of candles.

‘I swore never to be silent whenever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.’
