Partnership work to improve services for people with Learning Disabilities will be show-cased at the second annual ‘Big Day’ event this month.
The Somerset Learning Disability Partnership Board, of which Somerset County Council is a partner, is holding its annual ‘Big Day’ on 13 February at County Hall in Taunton.
It gives members of the public and those who work within the learning disabilities sector the chance to find out more about what the Board does and how they can get involved.
Partnership Board members have an interest in improving services for people with learning disabilities and their families and work with and give advice to councils, health, service providers and other groups to make things better for people in their community.
This year the ‘Big Day’ is being held in the Luttrell Room at Somerset County Council, County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY on Monday, 13 February from 10am – 3pm. Due to the limited capacity of the venue, places will be prioritised for people with learning disabilities and their families.
At the ‘Big Day’ people can find out more about the Learning Disability Joint Self-Assessment, which helps people with learning disabilities and their families discuss what services are working well for them and what needs to get better. Speakers this year include people who use direct payments to organise their own care and people who have bought their own home with help from a government home ownership scheme.
‘Big Day’ will also give voluntary and community sector organisations the opportunity to network with attendees during the lunch break of the event. There will also be a number of stalls for people to find out more about staying healthy, keeping safe and living well and an opportunity to ‘try out’ some assistive technology which can help with everyday tasks.
If you represent an organisation which supports people with learning disabilities to stay healthy, stay safe and live well, please contact Somerset County Council to reserve your free space for a display stand or stall.
Cllr William Wallace, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for Learning Disabilities, said: “This will be a fantastic event both for people with learning disabilities and their families as well those working in the sector. It will be a great networking event and a chance for people who have learning disabilities to give much valued feedback on the care and services they receive.”
