From Saturday 1 April Somerset County Council’s Customer Contact Centre (Somerset Direct) will no longer operate a non-emergency telephone service on a Saturday.
With more people taking advantage of the authority’s online facilities, which are available all day every day, calls on Saturdays have fallen to account for just one per cent of all contact.
We also have an automated telephone service on our 0300 123 2224 number that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which you can use to make online payments.
The Contact Centre will continue to be the first point of contact telephone service for all Council services from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm.
Anyone with concerns about the safety of a child or vulnerable adult will still be able to phone 0300 123 2224 for the Emergency Duty Team out of hours number. In an emergency always contact the police by dialling 999 or if it is not an emergency and you want to talk with the police, dial 101.
On an average Saturday the contact centre receives around 61 calls. Across a 12-month period this makes up 0.8% of the total contacts (calls and emails) received by the contact centre. The types of calls that are regularly received include, renewing of library books and reporting highway issues and sending out general information.
