Families enjoyed a day of fun and excitement yesterday (Sunday 23 April), when sporting and charity mascots from all over the South West joined forces in a very special steeplechase at Wincanton Races for The Children’s Brain Trust.
Representing ‘Fostering and Adoption in Somerset’ was ‘Sparky’, Somerset County Council’s dragon mascot, competing with the likes of Taunton Football Club’s Cat Wordsworth and Yeovil Town’s Jolly Green Giant.
Sparky put in his best effort; even including some pre-race training on the Wincanton Races assault course.
“It was a thrilling race,” said event organiser Geoff Smith and fundraiser for the Children’s Brain Trust “with dramatic falls and a photo finish between a dolphin and a giant chef. Where else would you see that?”
Large crowds turned out to watch as Sparky ambled over hurdles to place in a respectable sixth position.
At the end of the race, there were sporting handshakes between the rival mascots and a special parade, where the children attending were able to come and greet their favourite characters. Sparky loved posing for photos with adoring new fans.
Julian Wooster, Director of Children’s Services at Somerset County Council said: “This was an enjoyable family event for all and an excellent opportunity to spread the message of our need for foster carers of all ages to provide children with a loving home.
“More foster carers are needed in Somerset right now. If you are over 21, have a spare room and the time to care for a child we would love to hear from you.
If you can provide a safe and loving home for a child or young person we would love to hear from you.”
