On Saturday 7 October, eight of Somerset’s libraries will transform into “Fun Palaces”, offering a free day of arts, culture and sciences for all to get involved in.
The events are part of Fun Palaces 2017, a free nationwide celebration of community.
Fun Palaces bring people together to create and have fun through arts and sciences.
People are encouraged to visit Bishops Lydeard, Bridgwater, Dulverton, Frome, Priorswood, Somerton, Taunton, Wells, and Yeovil libraries to share their talents and discover the hidden talents in their community.
Each library will host a variety of events and workshops.
People can come along to Bishops Lydeard Library from 10 am to 1pm and take part in a fun morning of yarnbombing.
At Bridgwater Library come along between 10am to 1pm and access a morning of activities including Laser Maze, Jedi training, micro:bits, Raspberry Pi, and craft activities and experiments.
Over at Dulverton library, between 11am and 12pm take part in an interactive Storytime session.
Or head along to Priorswood Library between 10am and 12pm to take part in community finger knitting, book folding, LEGO challenges and more.
People can visit Somerton library between 10am and 12.30pm and talk with local producers and take part in fun craft activities.
At Taunton Library, people are welcome to drop in between 10am and 2pm to take part in their Science Fest. Take part in arts and crafts with local artists, Get the ‘Dirt on Germs’ from Dr Sariqa Wagley, Cycle together across Somerset Libraries with Anytime Fitness, take part in 3D Printing, Read together with the Reader organisation, and learn about Raspberry Pi’s.
This year Taunton Library are also closely working in partnership with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO). UKHO collects and supplies hydrographic and marine geospatial data for the Royal Navy and merchant shipping, to protect lives at sea. Software engineers from the UKHO will be running a ‘Program the Programmer’ activity as an introduction to code, alongside experts in astronomy and celestial navigation from HM Nautical Almanac Office.
At Wells Library take part in their ‘To Boldly Go’ day between 10am and 3pm. Become Space detectives in our craft activities, have a look at the Cassini Mission with Wells and Mendip Astronomers, take part in 3D printing with the Blue School, and discover so much more.
Or come along to Yeovil Library to take part in ‘The Creation of Sound’ between 10am and 2pm. Experiment with how sounds and musical notes can be made in unusual and creative ways. Building a synth Noise Machine, a sound installation, a glass harp and creating an orchestra from veg are just some of the exciting events you can take part in.
On Sunday 8 of October, Frome library will be continuing the celebrations between 1.30pm and 4pm for afternoon tea, live music, crafts and activities for all to discover and celebrate our community!
