National Adoption Week comes to Somerset

‘National Adoption Week’ launches on 16 October to raise awareness of the number of children waiting to be adopted.

Somerset County Council has launched a ‘have a heart’ campaign to encourage people to either consider adopting a child or to help spread the word about the urgent need for more adopters.

Many people in Somerset have already got involved with the campaign including local businesses and sport teams, Somerset County Councilors, children in care, foster carers, local school children, guides, brownies and beavers and a quilting circle in Yeovil.

Inventive #haveaheart themed pictures have been made and shared on social media and the children have worked on a heart display for the windows of County Hall in Taunton.

Councillor Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, said: “We offer our sincere thanks to all the people, businesses and organisations that have displayed a ‘National Adoption Week’ poster or taken part in our ‘Have a Heart’ campaign via Social Media.

“Somerset needs a minimum of 30 adopters this year alone to give Somerset children a forever Mum or Dad, so every poster or social media post shared will help spread the word. If you are looking to start or complete your family, we urge you to consider adopting a child. There are children of various ages waiting right now, who deserve a safe and loving home. They include brothers and sisters who may have to be separated if they are not adopted together, young children with particular needs, and babies as part of our fostering for adoption scheme. You can find out more and read the experiences of adopters at fosteradoptsomerset.org.uk.”

James is one such adoptive parent. He explained why he and his partner decided to adopt: “We didn’t have kids of our own and we felt that we had a lot to offer someone who didn’t have a great start in life. Adoption felt like a brilliant idea – we could be the loving parents for a child and change the life chances of someone for the better.”

Somerset County Council is encouraging everyone to join in the ‘Have a Heart’ campaign to help spread this message: Take a photograph of a heart in as many ways as you like (from a children’s drawing to a design on a t-shirt to icing on a cake for example) and photograph it for social media. Then post the picture on Facebook, twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #HaveaHeart #SupportAdoption.
