The progression of Government plans to upgrade the A303 has been welcomed by Somerset County Council.
Highways England has today announced that Option 1 is the preferred route for a new dual carriageway between Sparkford and Ilchester.
This option largely follows the route of the existing A303 and was the preferred route for 64 per cent of the public during Highways England’s recent consultation.
The next step will be for Highways England to develop the details of the scheme before further public consultation this winter. They then hope to submit an application for the required Development Consent Order in summer 2018 with a view to starting construction in 2020.
Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources and Economic Development, said: “Upgrading the A303 will provide significant benefits for both residents and businesses in Somerset and we are pleased to see progress with the plans to improve the route.
“The proposals will now be developed further and we look forward to seeing the detail. Don’t forget, there will be further consultation so I encourage anyone with an interest to look out for this and make sure your voice is heard.”
