The priceless role played by Somerset’s Trustees is being showcased at an event to celebrate National Trustees’ Week.
National Trustees’ Week starts on Monday (13 November) and Somerset County Council is working with partners to celebrate the great work Trustees do – and highlight opportunities to get involved.
National figures estimate that almost half of all charities have at least one vacancy on their board and more trustees are being urged to step forward and fill the gaps.
A celebratory Trustee event is taking place on Tuesday 14 November, 4pm-7pm, at Victoria Park Community Centre in Bridgwater for Chairs, Trustees or anyone with an interest in becoming a Trustee of a Somerset charity.
As well as an excellent networking opportunity, the event will also be an opportunity for charity leaders to take part in taster development sessions, find out how local organisations develop the Trustee role and discover what support and development opportunities are available in Somerset.
The event is free to attend, but places are limited. For more details and to register, click https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/somerset-celebrating-trustees-tickets-38392701604
Somerset County Council needs more School Trustees to step forward, willing to donate some of their time in helping to improve the lives of children in schools.
School Trustees (known as School Governors in Local Authority led schools) provide a critical role in ensuring a school or academy runs smoothly and provides the best outcomes for its children.
This involves attending at least six meetings each year, normally held in the evening. At these meetings, school governors and trustees offer critical advice and scrutiny of the decisions and policies of the school.
If you feel you have the experience or the skills, or know someone who would be suitable, please get in touch with SSE Governance Services to find out more. Telephone 01823 355757 or email SGS@somerset.gov.uk
Cllr David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset County Council, said: “Trustees play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions that really matter. People from all walks of life are welcome to become a Trustee but those with skills or experience in finance, HR, marketing, and legal expertise are particularly welcome.
“There are also plenty of other volunteering opportunities available in a wide range of Somerset County Council services – from volunteer driving to looking after rights of way paths, from children services to adult social care. Check out www.somerset.gov.uk/volunteering for more information.”
