Somerset County Council’s Adult Social Care team from West Somerset received high praise as a finalist at the national Social Worker of the Year Awards 2017.
At the ceremony in London the team were honoured as finalists in the ‘Team of the Year’ category for their innovation, creativity and outstanding work with vulnerable adults.
Over 400 Social Workers and Occupational Therapists attended from across the UK. The event was a chance to “celebrate the outstanding practice which has made a positive difference to individuals and their families.” as noted by Chief Social Worker for Adults, Lyn Romeo.
Chris Denovan, Locality Manager for West Somerset Adult Social Care at Somerset County Council, attended the event, she said: “It was fantastic for the team to be recognised as finalists at the award ceremony. I would like to publically thank my team for all the wonderful work they have done. I am so proud that our creative thinking is now influencing practice across Somerset and we are sharing our learning with other local authorities. There is still more work to do but I am confident that we can achieve more to improve outcomes for vulnerable people in Somerset.”
In 2016 the West Somerset team were part of a pilot project to change the way adult social care services operate to help people keep or regain their independence and connect more with communities. The team was given free rein to be creative – they set up drop-ins, improved decision making processes and organised networking events in communities with local service providers and partners. Its hard work means that people can now get advice and information quickly and they can find the right support or local solution that really meets their needs and allows them to be independent for longer.
And the team’s good practice is now being embraced by all areas of the county.
Cllr David Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Adults Services at Somerset County Council, said: “A huge well done to the team in West Somerset. It is brilliant that their hard work has been recognised on a national stage. Their creativity and innovation has helped to improve adult social care services and benefit local people and communities. They are making a difference to people’s lives every day and their commitment and drive is to be applauded.”
