More than 98 per cent of children in Somerset have been given a place at one of their top three Primary school choices this year, with more than 93 per cent securing their first choice.

Figures revealed by Somerset County Council show that 93.8 per cent of 5665 children starting school in 2018 received their first choice primary school, a slight increase on previous years and 98.4 per cent of children were given one of their top three choices.

Councillor Frances Nicholson, Somerset County Council Cabinet member for Children and Families, said: “It is great news that, thanks to the hard work of our teams, we have been able to meet the majority of parents’ and carers’ preferences. I wish all these children the very best as they start their primary school education in September and begin to explore their future. For those children who haven’t been offered a place at one of their top three choices, we will work with the families to make sure we meet their child’s educational needs.”

From 5665 applications received this year, figures show:

• 1^st preference met – 93.8 per cent (5313 applications)
• 2^nd preference – 3.6 per cent (202 applications)
• 3^rd preference – 1 per cent (59 applications)
