Maintenance works along the A39 Bath Road near Bridgwater are due to start next week.
The footways and kerbing along the stretch of road at Bawdrip, between the Crandon Bridge junction and the Knowle Inn, are showing signs of deterioration and are in need of resurfacing and repair.
Work is due to start on Tuesday 8 May and take approximately 10 days with temporary traffic signals in operation 24/7 to ensure pedestrians and road users can pass safely through the site at all times.
The temporary lights will be manually controlled during peak hours to minimise disruption as much as possible.
Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “This is a relatively straightforward job but it’s a very busy stretch of road which means some short-term disruption will be unavoidable.
“We’ll be working hard to finish work as quickly as possible, but please do allow extra time for your journey in this area, particularly at peak times.”
