More than 300 Somerset children and young people in care celebrated their achievements at a special ceremony designed to recognise their efforts.
Around 330 children were recognised for their efforts through nominations from social and youth workers and other Children’s Services professionals at the 2019 Annual Achievement Awards in Bridgwater.
The children and young people, from toddlers to young adults, were commended across five categories:
- Personal Achievement – showing resilience or personal development
- Positive Pastimes – doing well in sport, music, social, arts or leisure activities
- Education, Training and Employment – achieving at school, college, in training or work
- Helping Others – helping or making a difference to other people
- Courage – being brave in dealing with personal illness or tragedy, or helping and supporting those around them.
The event gave children and young people a chance to meet others sharing similar experiences and featured everything from a Mocktail bar – staffed by older members of the Somerset In Care and Leaving Care Councils SICC and SLCC – to a motivational speaker and entertainment.
Special mention was made of the event sponsors, along with Somerset In Care and Leaving Care Councils who not only contributed to organising the event, but who also commit so much time to projects helping others in care and in the wider community.
Cllr Frances Nicholson, Lead Member for Children’s Services at Somerset County Council said: “It is really important to celebrate the positivity, bravery and resilience that Somerset’s Children Looked After display in the face of great challenges, so I’d like to offer heartfelt congratulations to all the children and young people who were nominated in this year’s Annual Achievement Awards.
