Landmark expansion caps a great few years for Bridgwater College Academy

Pupils and staff celebrated the opening of a stunning new multi-million pound teaching block this week at their Somerset school.

The Chevalley building at Bridgwater College Academy, the latest addition in Somerset County Council’s ambitious school builds and expansion programme, was completed last month and boasts state-of-the-art science, humanities and languages teaching spaces which will create an extra 300 pupil places.

The project was managed by Futures for Somerset and built by contractor BAM, with Somerset County Council providing £8million alongside funding from the Academy.

This year has seen more than 800 school places created in Somerset since September as part of the biggest school builds/expansion project in a generation.

Councillor Faye Purbrick, Cabinet Member for Education and Transformation at Somerset County Council said: “It’s a fantastic to see the completion of these superb new facilities at the Bridgwater College Academy.

“Thanks for the hard work of everyone involved in getting this new building up and running and to BCA for such great collaboration. It is fantastic to know that the students will have access to some amazing learning spaces. “This project will help to meet the increasing demand for school places for Bridgwater and underlines our commitment to education, young people and families in Somerset.”

The Bridgwater College Academy has gone from strength to strength since forming in 2012, with the three schools in Sydenham joining together.

Peter Elliott CEO of Bridgwater and Taunton College Trust said:

“Over the past eight years The Bridgwater and Taunton College Trust has invested huge sums of money into developing the campus at BCA.

“This includes but is not limited to the FA standard 3G pitch, new squash courts, new outdoor play spaces, new changing rooms, new heating, windows, and lighting. We also know that in the coming months we will be opening new floodlit netball facilities, and a sports hall for our primary students which will be the only primary school in Somerset with a dedicated sports hall facility.

“The new Chevalley building is a great example of the LA and Trust working in partnership to develop more high quality school places for young people across the town of Bridgwater and is a welcome addition to our facilities.”
