Holiday activities for Somerset’s ‘free school meal’ pupils on offer again this winter

More free, fun activities are on offer this December for Somerset children eligible for free school meals.

The Happy Healthy Holidays Somerset (HHHS) project is once again being delivered by Somerset County Council and the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) as part of a Government initiative to help tackle inequalities in holiday hunger, physical inactivity and social isolation for children who are eligible for free school meals. The winter programme features football skills workshops, Christmas craft sessions, nerf games and much more, and every child receives healthy food and some nutrition advice.

This summer, children aged five to 16 took up more than 25,000 places at over 80 Somerset venues offering activities.

Jane Knowles, SASP Chief Executive Officer said: “We were delighted with the uptake in summer and how well the programme went, and we are very excited to be offering more children the chance to get involved during the festive season. Children can learn new skills and do something a little different with their school holiday time, which has been made possible by all of the activity providers. A huge thanks goes to them.”

Cllr Tessa Munt, Somerset County Council Executive Lead Member for Children’s Services, said: “Children and families, who may not be able to take part in activities like these have a chance to make their festive holidays a little bit more special with this fantastic initiative. The feedback from the summer was glowing and we hope everyone who attends this winter enjoys themselves as part of a lovely break from school before the new term begins.”

The HHHS winter activity programme runs from 19 – 23 December 2022. Booking is now open, and children can be signed up to a maximum of four of the activity days via this link: Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership – Happy Healthy Holidays Programme (, whilst one additional ‘family ticket’ day at venues like Farrington Golf Club and Brean Play can be booked via
